Special Cohiba Humidor
Cohiba has an almost cult-like standing when it comes to cigar aficianados. The Cohiba cigar brand has a long and storied history as the personal cigar of choice for Fidel Castro himself, who also bestowed some of his prized habanos on foreign dignitaries who visited the island nation. Well known and coveted all around the world, the Cohiba cigar is thought to be the smoothest and highest quality available, and they are highly sought, especially in the United States where it remains illegal to possess them as long as the trade embargo against Cuba persists.
Habanos SA, which is the government-run organization in Cuba that is the parent company for the cigar companies on the island, continues to make news regularly, and keep the brands fresh. In 2002, the company released a Cohiba 35th Anniversary Special Edition Humidor, filled with 135 high quality Cohiba cigars.Only 500 of these special edition humidors were released, and lucky was the cigar aficianado who received one under his Christmas tree that year, or any year since. This humidor contains several different sized vitolas (the size of the cigars) with a special edition cigar band minted solely for this anniversary edition. There are 20 Cohiba Esplendidos, 20 Siglo V, 20 Cohiba Robustos, and 35 Cohiba Lanceros. The humidor also included two special sizes that are guaranteed never to be mass produced again- there are also twenty each of the Gran Corona and Piramides vitolas.
With all of those cigars in one humidor, you'd expect this to be a brisk seller, correct? Well, as of 2008, the Vancouver Cigar Company still had one of the three special edition humidors (Number 422/500) left that it had ordered. The price? Just $15, 000.
